BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead presents The Rinse Cycle, the first survey exhibition of Jim Shaw’s work since 1999 and the first exhibition to bring all of his major series together.
Shaw’s work is informed by a relentless inquiry into the imagery of popular culture, the vernacular, art history, politics and religion, as well as his unconscious and ADD-fuelled mind. An obsessive cultural cataloguer, Shaw draws from these disparate sources to make work in distinct series that are intensively researched and often take years to complete. His first major project, My Mirage (1986–91), is a study of 1960s American aesthetics—each of its 170 component works is based on a pre-existing source.
