Two SFMOMA exhibitions—Six Lines of Flight: Shifting Geographies in Contemporary Art, currently on view, and South Africa in Apartheid and After, opening December 1—constitute a collection of stories from places under-recognized by the dominant global art economy. These are places where the questionable dynamics of center and periphery are in play, where collaborative, grassroots action sustains cultural communities, and where, in many cases, violent or repressive histories haunt collective memory.
