They shaved their heads on stage, “worked” with butter and eggs, destroyed grand pianos, and blew up heads of lettuce. It has been 50 years since a loose band of international young artists made headlines such as “Newest Music in Madhouse-Style,” “They Hang up Cabbage and Say it’s Art,” and “Can No One Stop Happenings?”
It is high time to take a fresh look at the Fluxus festivals of the 1960s and 1970s that took place all over Europe: Wuppertal, Düsseldorf, Wiesbaden, London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Nizza, Vilnius, Prague, Berlin, Aberystwyth, Budapest, Pozna? … Performative aspects of Fluxus will be in the focus. Rich material, much of which is yet to be published (films, audio tapes, photographs, scores, interviews with artists, and eye-witnesses) is presented in an interactive exhibition installation and background material is made accessible through a digital archive.
