MoMA’s exhibition Diego Rivera: Murals features eight freestanding frescoes by Rivera. This striking site accompanies and augments the museum’s physical installation.
The site is simple and clean, and uses a sidebar for navigation through four simply defined sections: Chronology, Rivera’s New York, Materials & Technique and Murals. The site presents the history and timeline of the artist’s life and work alongside a map of the area visited by Rivera during his trip to New York and the locations that eventually featured in his work. Within the gallery, users can select and explore specific murals up close by selecting The Mural In-Depth navigation button that features the murals in detail along with a slider that reveals sketches and the materials used to create them.
• Conceived, designed, developed and launched all within three months, the site offers an experience that was previously only available in Flash. Built with jQuery and CSS, it has the same smooth transitions, functionality and beauty of a Flash site (without the load time and with mobile compatibility).
• The site contains two videos and dozens of hi-res, explorable and interactive images.
• For certain murals it was important to show both the mural and the locations that corresponded to hotspots within the painting; a view was devised that allows visitors to explore the mural in tandem with the map.
• Each mural in the museum is accompanied by a QR code that directs people to the microsite.
