Offering an up-close preview of the work and letting visitors learn about each piece, as well as his process, past and point of view, this online visit through Mark Bradford’s exhibition is engaging and interactive.
The navigation divides the site into distinct sections: The left side is devoted to the artist’s studio and the right side to the art gallery. Users can drag on the gallery (content drifts as visitors scroll) to navigate between pieces and physically jump to any piece using bullet points along the top of the window. A draggable video/audio player allows for unobtrusive listening and watching while viewing the work.
While he is well known in art circles and perhaps the hottest contemporary painter working right now, Mark Bradford is less known to the general art fan. This site is the visible manifestation of his stature in the art world and gave people the chance to round out the in-person gallery experiences with virtual visits.
• Conversations and conceptualizing for the site began in December 2009 and it launched at the end of April 2010.
• Each gallery section loads progressively in the background, with priority shifting to the currently active section if it hasn’t finished loading yet. It also progressively loads images based on the current zoom level and position.
• A DeepZoom section was built with 17GB Photoshop document to piece together a virtual representation of the exhibition room. So large that it wouldn’t save as a .PSD (it had to be saved as a .PSB file), the resulting image was 164,381 pixels wide and 15,809 pixels tall (2.6GP). If it were printed on 8.5 x 11 paper at its native resolution (72DPI) and puzzled back together, the image would be 190′ 3″ wide and 18′ 3″ tall and would require 5,348 sheets of paper.
