Mark Morris’ The Hard Nut is not the frothy confection that we usually associate with holiday season ballet. Set to Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, Morris tells a darker version of the familiar tale. Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s original adult-oriented The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, rather than the more familiar version. The Hard Nut is a scary, though not frightening, fairy tale.
