The 2010 Design Annual launched on commarts yesterday. And, this year, more than others, I really appreciated getting up close and personal with the work online. Having been on leave this summer, I hadn’t gotten to know the work as it made multiple proof-reading rounds. While I’m often parked on the print side of life, being able to make images larger on-screen is nothing to sneeze at.
Packaging, again, was the largest category, and always a favorite, but some really impressive work in Annual Reports caught my eye. No, it’s not a mistake, I did type Annual Reports. Though their number may be small, only eight included in this year’s annual, those that made it are great examples of designers taking what otherwise would be rather dry information and making it into visual treats.
Another not-to-be-missed-seeing-online category: Motion Graphics. The design jury felt it was the most innovative work entered, and an area to watch:
“The amount of motion graphics and the integrity of the work submitted shows this is a trend that is only going forward,” said juror Bill Thorburn.
